Book, Paper and Photograph Conservation

The main components of book, artwork on paper and photograph are paper, leather, textile and pigment. It is inevitable that these natural materials degrade over time. The degradation is usually accelerated by high and/or fluctuating temperature and relative humidity as well as exposure to light and pollutants.

Common signs of degradation include:

  • Discolouration

  • Brittleness

  • Deformation

  • Silver mirroring (appears only on certain types of photographs)

It is recommended to conserve objects with the aforementioned signs of degradation. If left untreated, with combination of an unsuitable environment and bad handling, the object becomes more prone to physical damages.

Common physical damages include:

  • Tear

  • Crack

  • Loss

  • Joint breakage of a book

After thorough assessment, a sympathetic treatment plan is developed and carried out to stabilize a degraded object and reveal its full potential to ensure that it can be appreciated by future generations.

Chinese Ink Paintings

Chinese ink paintings are most commonly done on rice paper and mounted onto silk scrolls. These materials are delicate by nature and require extra precaution during restoration work.

We work closely with a Chinese Scroll Mounter to offer professional services for Chinese ink paintings, silk scroll-mounting and mounting artworks on paper.

Common Signs of Degradation

Chinese paintings are prone to stains, pigment losses, flaking pigments, and creases or tears. Silk scroll mounts degrade, resulting in tears, losses, stains and yellowing. With proper treatment, such signs of degradation can be minimized.

Treatment

It is believed that the history of Chinese mounting and conservation techniques began two thousand years ago. Over this long period, the Chinese developed very efficient tools and methods of conservation.

Following an in-depth assessment of the artwork, the mounting and restoration specialists will determine the level of treatment required and create a suitable treatment plan which might include:

– Reinforcement of Creases and Tears

– Inpainting Losses

– Remounting
